IVI-IPO Sues Over Parking Meter Give-Away
Meter deal illegal, suit asks for court to declare contract void

The Independent Voters of Illinois-Independent Precinct Organization (IVI-IPO) filed suit in Cook County Court in an attempt to overturn the city's privatization of parking meters. The suit, docket # 09CH28993, asks the court to declare the contract between the city and Chicago Parking Meters, LLC, illegal and void. The deal between the city and CPM violates state law because: the city did not have authority to lease city streets; the city cannot delegate police functions (parking enforcement) to a private company; the city cannot, through the 75-year lease, deprive future City Councils from the chance to exercise control over city streets; and the city cannot ask the Illinois Secretary of State to suspend driving privileges for violations at privately-held meters.

IVI-IPO has been positively shaping policy and politics in Illinois for more than 60 years. If you'd like to become a member, contact me, Suzanne Elder, at sueelder@sbcglobal.net or log on at www.iviipo.org
