They do seem to be closed as their front gate is locked with a padlock.
Anyone know if they sold the property or what they are planning to do with it?

While walking my Irish wolfhounds today one of my neighbors said Christopher House on Kenmore is kaput.
They do seem to be closed as their front gate is locked with a padlock. Anyone know if they sold the property or what they are planning to do with it?

I didn't see any signs of it being closed or sold. Nothing on their website either. That daycare center is used by a lot of families and it would surprise me if it closed down.

Well the Kenmore location is closed. At least for the moment. I was walking by the other day and they were taking some stuff out by truck. I just assumed they were swapping out old stuff for newer stuff. It is padlocked. It is also not showing as sold in the Recorder of Deed's website.
It has been a good neighbor during the 242 years I have called Uptown and Kenmore home. The building is ugly, but it really caused no real problems. Slight traffic during the day , but that was about it. I guess we shall see. |

It must be the rampaging anti-kid racists taking hold in Uptown. Mayor Daley was right! First it's the children's museum, then the daycare centers! Next to go are build-a-bear franchises and the American Girl store!

Actual address is 4303 Kenmore. I searched for sale info online but didn't find any. It is an ugly building.
Here is a pic off the assessors website. I call it early Jehovah's Witness gothic.

Hell they have other locations also.
One in Lincoln Park around 2500 Greenview. Old school building. If I were feeling ambitious I could search their website and fine more locations. |

We work in conjunction with them on various projects. The folks here at CME Group haven't heard about them closing. Maybe they just don't want people entering on that side anymore?

The simple answer is for some one to call them. I nominate JP Paulus as he is the conscience of Uptown.
It is certainly closed. The idea that they want people to enter from the rear of the building makes no sense. It is not an Aldi. What they plan to do or have done with the building I don't know. |

The office phone & the fax for the Buena Park location had no answer, while the other two locations in Uptown (at Winthrop & Leland and 850 W. Eastwood) had their voicemail operation.
i also left a voice mail at the main office. Hopefully they'll get back to me on Monday i am guessing they sold the property. i know the Leland location had many kids who were NOT living in Uptown. How about the BP location? Theland was certainly worth a lot of money -- i'm sure they could have bought & upgraded a new location PLUS have money for staff for a couple of years based on the (assumed) sale of the BP location. Their web site isn't current (latetst news is from 2006), and they would have to redesign their locations page (BP is #5 out of 7 locations listed), so i can understand why that hasn't bene changed (or will be for a while) |

I live next door and two other owners in my building have told us that it is closed and will be leveled and turned into condos. I'm not sure if this is completely true, but the caretaker/custodian of the building was the one that told them. I have seen no children (or cars blocking us in to drop them off) since last winter so it's very possible that they are correct.

It's not a win for condo-owners to have more condos thrown into a glutted market. I'd rather have the Christopher House with an upgraded building. That one was about as bare-bones as it gets.

Assuming it sold.
1. Christopher House gets a whole lotta money for other uses. 2. Property back on the tax rolls. 3. Ugly building goes kaput and perhaps a nice looking building is erected which beautifies the block and brings joy to one and all. 4. More people in neighborhood to spend their filthy money at local businesses. |

If you haven't noticed, there's a huge glut of condos on the market right now. This may change when buyers become a little less skittish about the market, but for now we don't need to add to the inventory around here--unless it's a crappy rental building full of drug dealers that's emptied out and converted into condos. I'll take that.

I just talked with Lori Baas, the executive director of all the Christopher House sites. She was very nice and willing to talk.
It will be officially closed by the end of the month. There are a couple of reasons: 1.        Lower enrollment. There are income eligibility requirements, and fewer neighborhood kids qualify. 2.        Cost of maintenance it was too expensive to maintain the facility Very soon, the property will be listed by @Properties. Lori said to contact her at 773-472-1083 if there are any problems with the property in the meantime, as they try to be good neighbors. (Im sure she also wouldnt mind any well wishes or thank yous as well |
